While working for a textiles company in China, Ryan Graven discovered customers wanted cut-and-sewn products rather than just raw materials. Graven saw a particular need for zipper mattress covers, so he started Dolven Enterprises—the predecessor to Zonkd—in 2009. He later relocated the business to the U.S., and today Zonkd provides end-to-end services for large mattress brands with in-house product development, manufacturing and distribution.

In just five years, Zonkd has gone from 30 to 750 employees. It’s a global operation, with headquarters in North Carolina and factories spread across five countries in Central America and Asia. Though the company initially relied on third-party partners, it now manufactures and distributes mattress covers, furniture covers, pet beds, mattress toppers and more.
As Zonkd expanded into new countries and product lines, communication became an issue. Orders might be called three different things in three different systems, making it even more difficult to manage a complex supply chain. With QuickBooks, the business also lacked visibility into its financial performance and inventory, and had no consolidated view of the enterprise.
Zonkd first automated paper-based processes for order-to-cash and procure-to-pay with NetSuite OneWorld. It then started using the system to run its supply chain, including inventory tracking and manufacturing, and today can provide detailed order updates to customers with visibility down to individual containers. Recently, Zonkd created success metrics in NetSuite for each team with corresponding alerts.
The manufacturer plans to continue verticalising and shortening the supply chain by using vendors and factories closer to the U.S., all in the name of reducing customer uncertainty and getting lead times under six weeks. Zonkd also wants to grow aggressively over the next few years, in part by designing and selling more of its own products.
