Raising Standards of Living and Improving Lives Through Services and Social Enterprise

By giving people the tools they need to live independent lives, Goodwill of Silicon Valley (GWSV) impacts everyone from the transient veteran; to an underemployed single mother who needs job training and paid work experience; to the local company that aligns with the organization’s GoodSource contract manufacturing arm. Along with its programs, it operates 19 retail stores, an online store, a reuse/recycling operation and a Contract Services division.

“I loved the configurability of the NetSuite system. I hate customizations and having to go through all of the different customizations with every upgrade to make sure nothing ‘breaks’.” Chris Baker, CFO, Goodwill of Silicon Valley

Impacting Lives

Harnessing the power of work
Part of Goodwill Industries International, 162 autonomous, community-based organizations, GWSV re-invests its revenue into the community through the power of work with programs that provide training and paid work experience. More than just a retail operation, it diverts 40 million pounds of goods from landfills annually supplying goods to local and international markets.
Blocking and tackling labor challenges
Recent minimum wage increases have added $6.5 million in expenses for an entity with $50 million in revenues. Retaining a strong, core labor force while providing training for a transient workforce proved a challenge.
Improving its financial position
In debt in 2009, GWSV has since invested significantly, remodelling stores and upgrading operations while building strong financial liquidity to ensure future sustainability. Implementing NetSuite in 2017 provided GWSV the data it needs to make confident, informed business decisions and track finances.
A technology leader
The organization is also eyeing a warehouse management system (WMS) to manage its retail and transportation operations. With a high volume of donated inventory—coupled with constant staff turnover—GWSV leverages NetSuite’s Advanced Customer Support (ACS) to optimize functionality and better understand its capabilities.
