DataBank Improves, Scales Workforce Management Processes as It Builds Data Center Empire

When the need for remote computing resources was just blossoming in 2006, DataBank Holdings built its first data center in the former home of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank. It has since become the largest privately-owned data center company in the U.S., operating 65 data centers across the U.S., England and France. It strives to meet all the hosting needs of its customers, including colocation, private cloud and public cloud services.

Implementing Better People Processes

Headcount doubles
DataBank has expanded its data center footprint by a factor of 10 over the last nine years, growing organically and through acquisition. After acquiring a number of smaller businesses, it more than doubled its total headcount and moved into 20 new markets when it took over zColo in 2020.
Processes don’t scale
The business’s small HR department relied on paper and email for new hire documentation, promotions and transfers. Its timekeeping tool struggled to scale and did not integrate with its payroll system. HR could only view payroll-related reports and had no easy way to monitor key metrics like diversity and turnover.
Self-service empowers employees
DataBank needed an HR management system to help it manage its growing staff and decided to add SuitePeople to its NetSuite OneWorld ERP system. Employees use SuitePeople’s self-service tools for PTO requests, onboarding/offboarding checklists and org charts, while leaders can view a variety of employee KPIs. Payroll is seamless with a new timekeeping system that’s integrated with NetSuite.
Capitalising on the moment
Weeks after the zColo acquisition closed, DataBank successfully paid 330 new employees, something that would’ve been difficult to accomplish without SuitePeople. That ability to quickly onboard new employees will be critical as the market for cloud software and services continues to grow—the business plans to double in size over the next five years.
